Dog & Pheasant, Mersea Island
FancyaPint?'s review...
At first glance, East Mersea would seem to have very little in the way of attractions. But in between the acres of farmland, you will find a vineyard, brewery, smoke house, some wonderful beaches, a 'static home' caravan park and this pub, the Dog & Pheasant. What you'll find if you stop for a visit is a traditional style pub with patterned carpets and hearty pub grub. The separate restaurant and large, pretty grassed beer garden attract the holiday crowd and day-tripping families, while the bar chummy camaraderie brings in a scattering of locals who hold court in the bar area. For us, we couldn't quite ascertain of the banter we received when the Mersea Island brewery beer ran out was disingenuous or not, but we'll give benefit of the doubt as we had a perfectly fine time here. After a you've blown the cobwebs away on the nearby beach, this is a reasonable place to come to enjoy a bit of food and drink.

How to find the Dog & Pheasant pub
Mersea Island is 7 miles from Colchester along the Mersea Road. Driving here is recommended, but theres also a bus service from Colchester. The Dog and Pheasant is located on the East Mersea Road, the only road in East Mersea. Also note: being connected to the mainland only by a causeway, the island is occasionally cut-off. If you don't want to have to swim across click this link for tide dates.
