A fairly traditional hotel set just off one of the more popular - and occasionally busy - parts of Mersea island, a stone's throw away from the marina and seafood eateries. It's a good spot for passing travellers to refresh themselves - there's a decent garden where you can enjoy a sniff of the sea, or at least estuarine, air. There were three ales on tap, including a choice from the Mersea's only brewery, so it was a surprising shame that it wasn't in the best condition we've ever had. Meanwhile the mediocre rating can be attributed to the fact that on our Sunday visit it has essentially turned into a restaurant - no-one was here just for a drink, leaving us plain imbibers outside in the cold, literally and metaphorically.

First weekend with great weather this year, so what better than a trip to the coast, some exercise, fresh air... and a pub lunch. All went to plan until the pub. Average food, and a very unpleasant owner/manageress... bizarrely using her own car to block-in customers, and only letting them out if they they could show they had bought drinks and/or food in the pub! Never seen anything like it... and won't be repeating the experience.
