Named after the illustrious occupier of the nearby castle, the Richard III is another decent pub in Middleham's tiny market place. Although it's another historic building (they all are round here) this one's been spruced up and modernised - providing comfortable, clean accommodation for the guests, but at the same time removing some of the atmosphere that you find in nearby places. Nevertheless, the beer's decent enough, the food hearty and plentiful and the service friendly. A handy spot if you're walking in Wensleydale.

We stayed in the village in early August and found the Pub to be a'Pub'. Wow, we still have some left, no food but fish and chip shop and a very good chinese take-away within 10 yards and customers are invited to bring their own food, just buy a drink. We met many local charecters and were made to feel like we belonged in the pub. The Landlord is very welcoming and friendly, but not in your face, and i tried all of his beers and all were of a standard i would expect, top quality. All in all, i wish it was my local !

We stay in the white swan and went around all the pubs .
went in to richard the 3rd ,its full of kids a lot looked under age .
they were open till 3 am in the morning .
so we had a late drink here .
But the beer was bad we had to change to bottles .
not the cleanest of pub
i would not go back .

Well we are staying tonight to see if the rumours are true. I am a food critic for the Journal and it will be interesting to see if the same happens to us. Have recieved a good welcome so far. Been to the Black Bull and had a great time...so here goes. We shall see what happens?

we stayed at the Richard III and on first impressions were happy with our choice. The room was clean and well presented and comfortable. We were told on arrival that the restaurant was full and we would only be able to eat in the bar. As this didnt appeal to us, we booked at table at a restaurant across the road from the hotel, the White Swan, where incidently we had a very nice meal and an enjoyable evening. On returning to the hotel, we decided to have a nightcap before going to bed, only to be publicly humiliated by the landlord and told that as we hadnt spent the evening in his bar, he would not serve us. Not wanting to cause a scene we left the bar and went back to the more friendly atmosphere of the hotel across the road. The following morning, on checking out we were accused of leaving the front door open and yet again made to feel like some sort of criminal. I have never been made to feel so unwelcome anywhere and would definitely never frequent this hotel ever again. I would certainly not recommend it to anyone wanting a warm and friendly welcome, you just wont get it here, unless you agree not to move "off site"!!!!!

This charming 17th century hotel stands in front of historic Middleham castle childhood home of Richard iii, at the centre of one of the Yorkshire dales most attractive towns.
Situated in the middle of the market square, this gives are guests a perfect opportunity to see some of the five hundred race horses that are trained in and around Middleham on their way up to the gallops. There are 16 racing yards covering both flat and national hunt and some of the country’s top jockeys can sometimes been seen riding out early in the morning.
