Thatcher's Arms, Mount Bures
FancyaPint?'s review...
Despite sounding like it could be in South America, Mount Bures is actually a small village on the Sussex-Essex border and away from the main centre of the village lies the Thatcher's Arms. Country pubs are often a mixed bag, with many now heavily focused on food and victims of over enthusiastic refurbishments; unfortunately the Thatcher's Arms falls into this category. It's an old pub but the boxy whiteness of the exterior doesn't lure you in, while the interior could be described as veering into 'Travelodge, circa 1998' territory. We were also surprised by the amount of reserved signs - either Sunday Roasts don't pass much muster in Essex, or people have low standards, as the food was distinctly average. Still, service was pleasant enough, even if enquiries after our health felt a little contrived. Still, there's a very good selection of regional, well kept ales, while the large garden with impressive views over the rolling countryside proved popular with numerous cyclists. Nonetheless, a rather underwhelming country pub.

I like my food, and I like my real ale, and I spend a fair bit of time around Colchester at various pubs and restaurants. Last Saturday the wife and I and our two adult children went to the Thatcher's Arms for the first time. The only real problem with the visit was realising that we've been missing out for some years! starts excellent, and I had the slow roasted belly pork, which was melt in the mouth delish, and sat on top of some lovely black pudding and mash and gravy. The wife had liver and bacon, and whilst she often fails to finish her plate of food, on this occassion I was worried she was going to lick the empty plate. The eldest son picked every bit of fish off the sprat starter. And with some nice real ale (just missed out on the porter!), it came in at 80squids for the four of us. Great pub, great food, great beer.
