Staff of Life, Mowsley
FancyaPint?'s review...
Apparently the Staff of Life in Mowsley resides in what was once an Edwardian residence, but we have to confess that the building and its residential location could make it look, at certain angles, like a luxury, new-build Barratt home. Inside it's a pastel and light wood utopia, although there are some interesting touches, such as the wine bottle display on the entrance ceiling and the cosy fireplace area. Drinking is the reserve (but not the preserve) of the front bar, for it also acted as an overflow from the back restaurant area during our visit. The rear decked garden (which receives a significant amount of dedicated space on the pub's web site) was looking like it needed new coat of varnish now, which may account for it being empty when we popped in. Service was cheery enough, there were a couple of ales and the Sunday Lunch made the grade, quality-wise. Overall though, if Barratt were to start a chain of pubs, they might look something like this; comfortable, clean, competent, but just a little bit bland.
