The Coach & Horses is one of the two pubs in Newgate Street village and the outside looks sufficiently olde worlde to peak your interest. As you get closer, however, you can see the pub's sign is beginning to look tired and peel away. Once inside, it's certainly very charming, with a number of smallish beamed rooms and scores of pewter tankards hanging behind the bar. Despite this teasing promise, alas the ale choice was merely adequate. We suppose the big draw here during the warmer months is the enormous garden, complete with a large covered area, smoking den, children's play area and plenty of benches. We had hoped to sample the Sunday Lunch which is usually available until 4pm, but our aspirations were dashed by a large wedding party who took precedence. Overall, it's a nice enough place and should rate higher than the two pint it receives, but we didn't quite warm to it here as we'd hoped. Perhaps a return visit will improve upon that.
