Every major city has at least one pub like this and happily Northampton is no exception. That's right: the Malt Shovel Tavern is a real ale haven. Happy it works as good traditional pub too. The exterior still sports pub signs from the long dead Northampton Brewery Company, while inside is a cosy, messy affair with plenty of breweriana to keep you amused. Expect up to 13 ales on the hand pumps at any one time, with some noteworthy local and micro brews. One of the peculiarities of real ale pubs is that they often serve up some fine music too; for the Malt Shovel's sins this seem to be some good old-fashioned lively Rhythm and Blues. We can't say we've visited many pubs in Northampton yet, but they'd have to be damn fine places to better our time here - a worthy five pint rated pub.
