In contrast to the other pubs we visited on the Isle of Man, the Peveril is, indisputably, the place to head if you are a fan of the different varieties of Okells beer. They were pretty much all available here, including Mild - which we struggled to find elsewhere on the island. And they were faultlessly casked as well. Throw in a very local, non-touristy clientele, and you have the quintessential working-class Isle of Man pub. Looking out over Peel harbour, the Peveril is arguably best visited just before sunset - and we lingered outside in the beer garden for a second pint just to see this. At one point, we witnessed a stand-off between a Manx cat and a passing dog: although the former did not exhibit a shortened tail, the unusual rear body shape - and characteristic foul temper - left one in no doubt about its genetics. This place is a little rough-and-ready, and we imagine those of a nervous disposition could feel a little intimidated: Peel is not the most twee of towns on the island. However, this is as "authentic" an Isle of Man pub as we found. Check it out.
