Spice Island Inn, Portsmouth
FancyaPint?'s review...
So this is a pub that absolutely lives the maxim that the three most important elements to a successful business are "location, location and location". On the Hard at Portsmouth Old Docks and one of two pubs that overlook the comings and goings to the Solent, this is a pub that needs to live up the view and by and large it does.
It's pretty standard fare in the food department and being a Greene King pub (we knew it first as a Whitbread Managed house) the beer is again pretty standard - but GK have now initiated a policy of guests that can occasionally throw up some gems.
If you're in Pompey at New Year Old Portsmouth is the place to be and occasional fireworks as well as passing Navy ships also mean that the ever changing vista make it one of the pubs to be in on any celebration day.
Good but not outstanding enough to be brilliant.
