The Still & West, Old Portsmouth
FancyaPint?'s review...
This must be one of the busiest pubs in the city because of the enviable position it has bang on the edge of Spice Island where the Solent meets the Portsmouth docks - and the photos on the walls of naval ships are worth the price of a beer alone.
Outside seating is a huge draw as long as it's not coming down in stair rods and at New Year it is heaving hereabouts as it is when the fleet are in or a Naval celebration is in full swing.
Food is good without being jaw-dropping - Fish and Chips come in newspaper if requested - and is good value we believe. Beer is now Fuller's (this used to be Gale's flagship house) which is no bad thing, and quality is strong. But this can be a pub in which the wait is almost too long at peak times, too long but perfectly understandable; it must be a nightmare to staff and run to the vagaries of the weather. Parking is also a problem and the nearby Gun Wharf Quays has stolen a fair bit of trade but the S&W still has to be one of the best in the City and with the view it enjoys is one of the most iconic pubs in the UK in our humble opinion.
Love it and stay a while watching the shipping traffic floating by.
