Chequers is a proper village pub of the type you'd hope to come across while travelling in the countryside. A flower festooned front leads to an older style pub - the last big refurb looks like it would have been in the 1970s. The front bar isn't massive - and most of the rear section was set aside for dining, but it still felt like a proper pub. A games table, meat raffle and bread basket (we never worked out if the loaves were for sale, or ornamental) all add a touch of quirkiness you only get with a proper freehouse. When you add an excellent choice of ale, a charming garden and friendly service, it becomes almost perfect. We say almost, as the choice of wine was pretty poor and there was no need to have music and golf vying for aural space simultaneously - especially when no-one was watching it. Still, worthy of a hearty thumbs up.
