Cwellyn Arms, Rhyd-Ddu
FancyaPint?'s review...
Nestled in the Western foothills of Snowdon (or Yr Wyddfa as it is known to its Welsh speaking patrons), the Cwellyn Arms exudes a warm welcome to weary winter hikers and offers the perfect vantage point for an outdoor pint on a summer's day. Perhaps more pleasant in the off-season, when it is less thronged with weekenders staying at their excellent campsite a short stumble (or an arduous trek, depending on the length of the day's hiking) up the road on the shore of Llyn Cwellyn. The landlords clearly have a good grasp of what various shades of drinker look for in a pub, offering an excellent choice of lagers (tap and some interesting Belgian varieties by the bottle), whiskies (not just your standard Diageo 6) and wine, but it is the ales that put the Cwellyn on the map. Choice is never in short supply, with a constantly changing range of up to 10 ales on the pumps, many of the local, Welsh variety. Not for nothing have CAMRA made this Snowdonia Pub of the Year more than once. The bar area is small and cosy, complete with log fire and a stuffed toy bear. It seems that not much has changed here over the years since the now nicotine stained photographs that cover a central pillar were snapped. The food is good too. On our last visit the steak and mushroom pie and bangers and mash were the perfect reward for the completion of the Snowdon range and a final descent down the Rhyd Dhu path that delivers thirsty walkers almost directly to their pint.

Nice location, real fire but a rip off !
The landlord is a miserable git who doesn't care about customer service because he makes enough without worrying about repeat business.
It is the only pub for miles and this is clearly reflected in the attitude of the staff.
I was asked by one staff member if my meal was OK, I commented that a few extra chips would be nice and she returned a few minutes later saying that any more would cost extra.
My girlfriend's meal was more like starter to be quite honest.
Tip - use the bus or train to get down to Waunfawr and go in the Snowdonia Parc Brew Pub where the food and beer (real cask ales too) is about 60% of the price of the Cwellyn Arms, the staff are human and they can get you a taxi back to Rhyd Ddu for a tenner !
4 of us visited the Snowdonia Parc Pub twice and on both occasions the beer and food was excellent and reasonably priced and the staff were more than helpful.
