Anyone who reads 'Pints of View' - Hertfordshire's real ale drinker's magazine of choice - or has a passing interest in the exploits of CAMRA, will be all too familiar with this pub. Having been nominated as a finalist in CAMRA's 2007 National Pub of the Year, its not entirely surprising to find an outstanding choice of unusual and well kept ales and ciders here - over half a dozen on our visit. Landlord and lady are clearly proud of their wares - the sheer number of pint glasses from various ale festivals indicates a certain dedication. Other than that, it stands up as a good pub in its own right, too. Traditional in look, but still light and airy, service from the gantried bar was efficient and accommodating, while the locals were an amiable bunch. Lunch is served until 2.30, Tuesday to Saturday, although pasties and pork pies are available all day every day - but this is first and foremost a drinkers pub. Perfect after a walk around the countryside of Heronsgate, a number of events, including book and film clubs and games nights makes this a worthwhile local, too.

Recently visited for the first time after reading many reviews. As I live a fair distance away it has to be by car for me so necessarily restricted to 2 pints. The quality therefore has to be good to warrant a repeat visit. This pub ticks all the boxes. Good atmosphre. Pleasant setting. But most of all a very good pint (or two! )and a pork pie to die for. If only I lived closer. But thanks anyway for keeping this pub as it is and not having your heads turned by other hospitality trade distractions. As I've only visited once so far and have only sampled one ale I can only give it 5 stars!!

Driving: From J17 on M25, take Heronsgate (Long Lane) exit from roundabout and you will find us on the right less than a mile up the lane. Walking from Chorleywood Station, from main exit, turn left and follow the road under the railway. Continue uphill (Shire Lane) and follow the road into Heronsgate Road. Continue along the road, passing Stag lane on the left. The pub will be on your left, just downhill past the small reservoir.

Overview

Often described as 'a proper' pub, this is a traditional village pub with a traditional feel to it, with a strong focus on real ales from British micro-breweries.

 

Most customers are friendly, local regulars and visitors who travel to us for the beer range.

 

We are a convenient stopping point for commuters, being located less than a mile from J17 of the M25, up Long Lane.

 

Please note we do not serve meals or allow under 14s in the pub, although families are very welcome to use The Pavilion and garden areas.

Detailed Description

The bar usually features 6 real ales, with 2 regulars and 4 changing beers. Kaltenberg Hell is our regular lager, and we stock a range of real ciders and perries.

Spirits and a wide range of soft drinks are always available, as are teas and coffee.

 

Bar snacks are on sale all day, typically pork pies, Cornish pasties (usually cooked to order), pots of home - cooked nuts, and other seasonal snacks such as olives, etc. Please ask at the bar. We can cater for groups by prior arrangement with baguettes or buffets.

 

Regular events include beer festivals, quiz nights, book club, film club, charity events, etc.
