A waterside pub in the truest sense, the vista from the shore of this North Yorkshire former smuggling den is brooding and rugged. Tourists wait for high tide, whose waves rise some five feet against the high wall adjacent to the pub (sadly, we were unable to capture these on film due to our pressing need for a pint). But the pub itself is a distinct letdown. It's busy at lunchtimes and early afternoon due to its children-friendly policy and reasonably-priced menu (it also has an upstairs dining room), but despite marking the official end of the 190-mile Wainwright Coast to Coast Walk (St. Bees in Cumbria to Robin Hood's Bay, passing three National Parks) it's a pretty bland nineteenth hole. The beer selection is especially poor, given the wide range of brews available in North Yorkshire generally. It's worth looking out for the inglenook fireplace, but otherwise it's a disappointing experience. In particular, the nautical-style wooden wall panelling is half-stained, half-varnished and the juxtaposition doesn't work at all. With the splendid setting it enjoys, it could and should be much better.
