The Castle Inn, Sandown
FancyaPint?'s review...
Having to be directed to this one, tucked away behind the High Street, we had to ‘turn right at the rock-shop, and right again’. So, hidden away behind the main shops, lies this little gem of a locals’ boozer in the Island’s busiest resort town. Bigger inside than it looks, this is a clean and comfortable pub with a very welcoming atmosphere. It also offers a good range of bitters, all in excellent condition, from a cool, cool cellar, the Landlady promising us she would never dream of running good draught beer through a cooler. They major on Young’s Special here and it has be said that we thought it was as good or better down here than we’d tasted it recently in London.
An enclosed patio area at the back provides a pleasant place to sit out on a warm afternoon, and the locals are friendly enough. Be warned, however, about the pub’s silly black dog. He likes to get people to throw his ball down the hill so he can fetch it back. Again and again and again. Locals know to ignore him but, understandably, they like to watch you work at it for a bit before they tell you.
