We had a flying visit to Sandwich and locals told us that this was the pick of the pack, certainly as we were looking for a place that did good food. We're aware that a lot of pubs that concentrate on the quality of their food allow the quality of their beer and atmosphere to slip. Not so with the George & Dragon. This pub is very much a case of beer in the front, food in the back. Being a Kent pub, of course you'll find Shepherd Neame on the pumps but they don't let it dominate, we found Harveys and two smaller breweries' ales in good condition on offer. We'd booked a table in the 'restaurant' bit at the back and it was necessary. The quality of the pub's food was clearly well known to the area and they were full. There was some interesting stuff on the menu but it was all very understated, despite being cooked to perfection. Down sides? It's very small and if you're driving here, you might have to park a short walk away. I think those are things that you can live with though.
