The Bull, Sawbridgeworth
FancyaPint?'s review...
It's easy to forget that there are a few genuine Freehouses still dotted around the country and in an age of bland conformity, these pubs can look all the more idiosyncratic as well as being even more appreciated. At The Bull, located on the very edge Sawbridgeworth, you get the measure of the landlord and lady's interests very quickly: greyhounds. Everywhere you look are bonze statues of greyhounds, even gracing the entrance to the pub garden. Elsewhere photos taken at Walthamstow Dog Track adorn the walls and a cabinet is filled with cups and medals. It all becomes clear when the elderly champion from the photos makes an entrance, flopping down on the bench seating, while attempting to ignore his pal, an overexcited Jack Russell. Apart from that, there's plenty of ephemera and boxing memorabilia to look at dotted around this cosy, low-ceilinged, wooden-beamed pub. The locals are witty and friendly, while the service attentive and the lone Spitfire ale well kept. Sawbridgeworth is blessed with a fair few excellent pubs and we certainly include the Bull on that list; we'll certainly be lured back.
