Until now, we’d come to expect all station pubs to be pretty low down in the quality stakes, such was our bitter experience. Happily, however, the Sheffield Tap completely refutes that expectation. It’s a fantastic pub, housed in a careful, obsessive even, restoration of the elegant Edwardian Refreshment Room & Dining Rooms in the station, it offers an equally obsessive range of excellent beer from around the world. The long mahogany bar hosts ten hand pumps and twelve taps offering an ever-changing selection of well-kept beers and the Sheffield Tap claims to offer 2,000 bottled beers if there’s nothing on the pumps that takes your fancy. The service here matches the beer and surroundings, the staff are friendly and knowledgeable - they’ll help you make your selection from the superabundance of choice and the atmosphere is relaxed and amiable. It should come as no surprise that CAMRA awarded the Sheffield Tap its ”Best Conversion to Pub” award this year, the owners have got everything just right. So, if you find yourself at another station in the UK, waiting for overdue friends or family to arrive from South Yorkshire, chances are the Sheffield Tap is the cause of their delay. Who could blame them?
