In 2010, the Highcliffe Hotel looked like it was about to join the ever-growing list of failed pubs, that is until Thornbridge Brewery stepped in and took it over. In a remarkable transformation, the Highcliffe became the Greystones and in the process changed the pub from a dismal, rundown experience into a fantastic, lively local. Naturally, Thornbridge’s range of cask ales features prominently, but it’s not just the beer, excellent though it is, that makes this a great pub. The service is friendly and knowledgeable, the renovation work has created a pleasant, light and airy ambience and the atmosphere is amiable and relaxed. And the story doesn’t end there, the large function room at the rear of the pub hosts to almost nightly events, from comedy nights to live music and has played host to such luminaries as Richard Hawley, Wild Willy Barrett and Wilko Johnson. There’s a quiz too and excellent bar food, it’s a true community pub.The Greystones is now, quite simply, one of the best locals in the UK and an excellent example of what can be achieved with a little imagination and a lot of hard work, even in the current harsh economic environment.

Be aware that this pub holds children's parties, amoung other events, at the weekends. On our last visit there were children sitting on the main bar, running around screaming and shouting with no intervention from the parents or bar staff. This experience has resulted in the decision not to patronise this pub in the future. There are plenty of other wonderful pubs in Sheffield who have a much more sensible attitude when it comes to the presence of children.
