The Milestone, Sheffield
The Milestone sits in an area that once was dismal, grimy, noisy, busy and bereft of any creature comforts, but the industries that made Sheffield great and this neighbourhood so unhealthy have long since moved far east, leaving the nothing but empty industrial shells. The properties that once housed these engines of economy have languished semi-derelict for a few decades, until the council stepped in to rejuvenate and things are now beginning to pick up. The area (Kelham Island) is still far from being a major tourist attraction, but there are now real reasons to visit these parts and the Milestone is definitely one of them. Billing itself as Sheffield's first true gastro pub, the Milestone offers a typical, high-class gastro menu (featuring local produce), a range of beers, wines and cocktails and all the other trappings of an upmarket twenty-first century boozer. A good deal of money has been spent on the place - and it shows, the result is a nicely renovated, ramshackle old (early 19th Century) building, with a cool, clean, modern interior. The upstairs restaurant offers more formal dining and the ground floor bar provides drinking space (although you can eat here too). However, all this high-class recreation comes at a price - you'll find you'll be paying Kensington, rather than Kelham Island prices, which is bit of a shock in these parts, quality doesn't come cheap, even in Sheffield.
