The Sligachan Hotel must have one of the finest locations in the whole of the UK. Situated between the towering Cuillins and Loch Sligachan, in the heart of the Isle of Skye, it’s an ideal base for walkers, climbers, nature lovers, ramblers and even those who rarely step from their cars - but what of the hotel and in particular, what’s the attraction for the discerning pub-goer? For ale enthusiasts the answer is simple, the hotel has its own microbrewery - the Cuillin brewery. Using the peaty water from the nearby river, the brewery produces a range of excellent ales, which can be enjoyed in the two bars and the restaurants in the hotel. As well as the own-brewed ale, there’s a usual range of beers and lagers and, naturally a fine selection of malts over 200 we were told, just thing to enjoy by the log fire, after a hard day in the hills. The restaurant specialises in steak, although there are plenty of other choices and there are bar meals available seven days a week. It’s an immaculately maintained place too, the service is friendly and fast and accommodation ranges from comfortable hotel rooms, through to a bunkhouse and self-catering cottages. And there’s even a giant play area for the kids. If you are any kind of outdoor enthusiast and you enjoy great ale to accompany fine food (especially if you like steak), it’s difficult to imagine a better place than the Sligachan Hotel.
