The Black Horse is a rare beast nowadays - a back street pub on a tiny street, in the middle of nowhere. Just outside of the M25, on the way to St Albans, the Black Horse is a cosy and charming Greene King pub. Food is on offer at lunchtimes, but you can see this is first and foremost a drinking establishment. The decor is traditional: wooden beams, brass plaques on the wall and an open fire. The small eating section looks like your Nan's front room. Apart from the locals, there is a small stream of walkers coming from the nearby Redwell Wood who probably help prevent it from becoming too parochial here. Service is friendly and the ale acceptably kept. When you add in a large grassed back garden, this becomes a nice little spot to stop off if you're in the area.
