Up and into the suburban roads that lead out of Ryde and down to its western beaches and you’re bound to pass the High Park. Differing from many Ryde pubs in that it does little to attract the passing trade, being a bit basic in its decor, while remaining clean and tidy in all of its presentation. What the pub has succeeded in developing, however, is its own identity as a friendly ‘locals’ boozer. Certainly all of the staff and most of the customers appear to know each other very well, and a witty and sometimes explicit banter carries on. Strangers are made welcome and, after a couple of pints, invited into the intimacy. We experienced the funny humourous and the funny peculiar rituals of the pub’s Friday Night ‘meat-draw’, complete with meat related song snippets (yep!) and animal impressions. Absolutely crazy, but warm hearted, funny and spontaneous, which just about sums this pub up. A decent range of local beers, but only crisps, nuts and cheese toasties to keep you fed.
