We're not about to condone lying, but who amongst us hasn't told a fib once in a while? The Spread Eagle is only for home fans when Southend play at nearby Roots Hall, which made us think this must be the best local pub. The bouncers didn't seem overly convinced we were supporting the Shrimpers but after a long dialogue they relented, in time for us to watch an earlier match on one of the pub's tv screens. What we discovered was a more than adequate two-room affair with good service and a decent selection of ales. There is a pool table, darts, a weekly quiz was advertised, while a further room upstairs sometimes plays host to live music. Away fans should head to the nearby Golden Lion.

How to find the The Spread Eagle pub

Prittlewell is the closest station. Head along East Street to the junction of Victoria Avenue, cross over and you'll see the pub in front of you to the right hand side. From Southend Victoria just head straight up Victoria Avenue. Southend Central is a bit further -- turn left, then left again into High Street. At the end you'll see Southend Victoria, and can follow the directions from there.
