First off, credit where credit's due: this is St Albans only microbrewery and is deserving of a visit. They usually produce two or three ales and happily we can report that their IPA wasn't bad at all. Nestled in amongst a small parade of take-aways, it lies slightly away from the main pub areas and sits rather awkwardly in this less pretty bit of St Albans. A recent refurbishment has also attempted to make it light and airy, but we found it a little too piney and modern for the old building it sits in. Still, it looks like it might be a lively place on a Friday night and the beer garden is a handy bonus - albeit in a town where scores of pubs have them. Ultimately, unless you're having a really good time here we can probably recommend moving on to some of the other fantastic pubs in the area.

The food is pretty good here, the hand cut chips are great.
