Along with its neighbour the Rose and Crown, the Six Bells looks a quintessentially Olde English public house. Happily, inside it still retains much of its charm, with low ceilings and a huge fireplace. Befitting a place which looks for all the world as if it's in the countryside (even if it's not really) there were plenty of walkers and dogs, along with a camaraderie of friendly locals - photos of a local Elvis night on a pinboard indicated a dedicated regular following. You'll also find a handful of real ales, a separate restaurant and a pleasant enough paved back garden. It doesn't quite tip over into four pint territory on our visit, but this is still a very good pub.

How to find the Six Bells pub

From St Albans train station, exit right onto Victoria Street and after a 10 minute you'll hit a t-junction where you turn left onto Chequer Street and shortly after right onto the High Street. Carry on down as it becomes George Street which segues into Rome Hill and eventually Fishpool Street. At the end of Fishpool Street veer left, cross the bridge and the pub will be on the right. Phew. St Albans Abbey station is nearer but less useful to most people.
