Finding a pub in St. Albans is easier than shooting fish in a barrel, but while many of these veer towards a traditional feel, the Peahen provides a more contemporary approach. Despite its designers forsaking their imagination for the oft-favoured stripped-out interior look of so many chain bars, the friendly staff help it to stand out. We did, though, end up back at the bar to order food after the promised table service never materialised. It is clearly aimed at a younger audience and we think more suited to a big night out than catching a quiet beer, though a seat at the window provides an excellent place to watch the world go by during the day. A back yard doesn't compete with the town's best beer gardens, but is a bonus for the central location, while food is served up until 10pm.
