This pub has a better town/gown mix of clientele than do most in St As: to some extent, this is facilitated by an informal and partial small front bar (locals) and larger rear room (university types) divide. Although the rear area has more comfortable furniture, the front bar is probably better for random banter with strangers. Indeed, on our most recent visit a (most odd) stranger offered to buy your reviewers some drinks there, and on being informed of our selection (Belhaven Best) asked if we thought that he looked like a papist', an identity he appeared to be keen not to assume, to judge from his quite colourful turn of phrase. He also claimed to be a retired heavyweight boxer. Nutters apart, this pub has a sufficiently pleasant, unpretentious, character, a few real ales, food available, and a cast of loyal regulars.
