The Gaslight

Situated directly opposite the tube station, The Gaslight is a sparsely furnished place with little to recommend it. Loud pop usually blares out, making this more a convenient meeting place than somewhere to linger over a pint.

The Twelve Pins

The sheer size of The Twelve Pins and its proximity to Finsbury Park station limit its appeal a little, but it's not really so bad. The interior is quite magnificent, if a little careworn, a good example of a Victorian pub...

Marquess Tavern

Off the beaten track, but surprisingly near Essex Road's mob of bars, lies the Marquess Tavern. A magnificent unspoilt Victorian building, it boasts a comfortable front bar with original wood panelling and a back room (probably...

The Latin Corner (ex The Copenhagen)

We never managed to brave a drink in the impressive looking but rough Copenhagen and it's with some regret that we had to wait for it's conversion into a Latin Bar to give it a chance. We say regret, as this is a surprisingly...

The Railway

Located right beside Finsbury Park tube and bus stations, this small, oddly laid out and sparse pub is arguably a convenient place to meet people, rather than hanging around outside the station. The service is friendly enough,...

Drapers Arms

Five pints for this gastropub that does have a focus on food but which is happy to let you nurse a pint. Frankly, even if you go in there for a quick drink, you're likely to bow to the inevitable and eat something, if only one...

The Quays

The exterior of The Quays is certainly interesting. Views through the windows are blocked by shelves of old bottles, while uplighters illuminate the blue walls in a tacky alternating spectrum of colour. The interior is also...

The Alma

The Alma can be pinpointed as having the feel of the first wave of gastropub makeovers. Loungey furnishings at the front of the pub and more formal tables at the back, it's a look that feels almost old fashioned compared to...

The George Orwell

Always good to see someone making a good go of things - and the current landlord of the Orwell does seem to be working hard at it. It's always been a bit of a difficult spot, not quite Islington proper, not quite Highbury and a...
