Tap East, Stratford
FancyaPint?'s review...
Pubs in shopping centres often suffer for the transience of their clientele, but Tap East is working to provide a good experience. Right next to the new Stratford International train station in Westfield Stratford City, it's still more than your average station pub. It's early days yet, but the modest premises now has an operating brewery on site and is offering two beers of their own making every day. When we were in last, we tried the Tap East Pale Ale which comes in at a modest 5.6% ABV. Very nice it is, too. Run by Uttobeer in Borough, the real ale on the pumps varies and changes often with a regular procession of guest beers. There's also a good selection of bottles ales in the fridges, including three from Longmont's Left Hand Brewery (Colorado, USA) which we got to try at the last Great British Beer Festival. The staff are friendly, and still learning their beers, hardly surprising as it's only been open a short while. The interior is eclectic/gastro/modern with mis-matched stools and butcherblock tables and the lighting can be a little on the bright side during the day, but hey, it's a new build not a historic pub. And if you weren't hungry when you went in, the smells from the nearby food court may prompt you to eat. The landlord was offering samples of fried bread from the nearby bread stall when we were in last and they were very nice, too. You could do a lot worse than this brewpub in Westfield.
