The Ferry House inn at Surlingham, even though the ferry itself is long gone, is an example of English pubdom at its best. Cheery and friendly, it appears to cater both to the local and tourist market, and has a superb location right on the southern bank of the River Yare, which is made the most of with both a fine beer garden and mooring points right outside. Some areas inside are set aside for dining, but not in such a way to undermine the pub atmosphere. There are several, mostly local real ales available, and the food is reasonably priced and first-rate (even with a decent selection of vegetarian options). There's occasional live music, and other events. Were it not for the inevitable late summer attraction of wasps to the garden, this would be something close to heaven on earth.

How to find the The Ferry House pub

While there are occasional, daytime, buses here from Norwich (Route 001), by the time evening has arrived they have all gone, so you probably need a car or a boat to get here.
