The Prince Alfred, Bayswater
FancyaPint?'s review...
Rather like the part of London in which this pub sits, the Prince Alfred is difficult to categorise satisfactorily. Both have the feel of being a place through which people pass, with the nagging sensation that there is more to them that lies beyond the reach of the casual visitor. This is not really the place to philosophise about one corner of west London - but nor is the pub really one that inspires deep thought. Admittedly, there are some soft leather chairs into which one might sink into a contemplative reverie if one were so minded - in winter there's a fire by which to do so too. There is an okay choice of drinks to aid the thought process - probably better for wine drinkers than beer lovers, though, it's not big on cask ales. It's roomy and there's a pleasant enough feel. But for all that it feels somewhat formulaic, it's run by a chain after all; we suspect that no matter how long you spend here the question posed by that great moral philosopher Cilla Black will remain unanswered. What's it all about, Alfie?
