This excellent pub is a hidden gem in the Essex countryside. We don't know how we found this one, but it's worth the trip out of London on a Sunday. It has a normal pub bit with a dining area off it, as well as a separate restaurant. The beer selection is good with well-kept beer on tap and a decent wine list which won't break the bank. If you want to eat here, it's worth booking as it does get busy, particularly for Sunday lunch. It's a fab pub to while away a lunchtime in, and it's worth a visit at other times too. Excellent food and good-sized portions, too. Only downside being that if you want to go here and you don't live in Toot Hill, someone's got to drive to get there.

Booked for Sunday Lunch and on arrival noticed it was Cash only no mention of this when booking. Very welcome fire very cosy on a damp day. Table was set very nicely although only for 9 not 10 of us as booked. The Sunday roast were grim, meat over cooked, both pork and beef,cauliflower very odd taste and texture. The carrots out of a tin cannot imagine anyone wanting tinned carrots and peas. Gravy no flavour at all and for £11. 95 very poor value. Not one of us wanted a dessert we were not prepared to risk it.We were celebrating my husbands birthday and this was a very disappointing part of our whole weekend away.

This pub is disgusting 4 of us went for a meal saturday night the food was awfull they tried to over charge by £20.00 ordered a fillet steak brought up something else would never go there again and I would reccomend anybody not to go there.

We have been many times in the past to the Green Man and thoroughly enjoyed the warm atmosphere excellent food and wine. However our visit last Saturday was most disappointing: The service was poor – we were not shown to our table; the wine was ready for us but no napkin to dry the bottle from the ice bucket when serving oneself; The main course arrived but the expensive vegetables came in ’shifts’ and at £3.50 a portion it would have been good to have had a serving spoon! The Sea Bass my wife had was small and very over-priced considering; The Mange tout had too much garlic; my Duck Sauce was out of a packet; Crumble was good but custard had skin on it; The cheese platter was substantial but the cheese was straight out of the fridge and not room temperature; service was slow, one of the two ladies was more interested in socialising at the bar that serving guests; All in all most disappointing especially at £77.75 for 2 courses and wine for 2 people and not even a light in the dark carpark to find your car

The pub's just off the A113 to Ongar. You will need a car to get there, as it's not near anything in particular . When you reach Stanford Rivers on the A113 toward Ongar, turn left where it's posted to the Toot Hill golf course. Carry on past said course and keep going straight. When you reach Toot Hill itself, you'll need to bear right and the pub's just ahead on the left. If you did fancy trying to get here by public transport, the nearest bus stop is probably the one about 1 and a half miles away, on the Epping Road (A414), near the junction with Blake Hall Road (you'll walk past the closed Blake Hall tube station on the way). Buses run between Epping (or Harlow) and Ongar that way, usually once or twice an hour - but it's not a particularly practical means of reaching the pub.
