Situated in the quiet, friendly village of Torver, just outside Coniston, the Church House Inn is nigh on perfect. It dates back to the 15th century and not a lot has changed. The low-beamed ceiling (with coins jammed into the fissures in the wood), flag-stoned bar houses a mishmash of furniture of all sizes, a fabulous fireplace and a well-stocked 5-strong selection of tasty local brews (Lakeland Gold being our favourite on the last visit). The owner and head chef, Michael, has made a name for himself locally with his excellent food which includes fabulous full English breakfasts if you're staying in one of the 5 comfortable rooms upstairs. If you prefer your bedding outdoors, the pub owns a field out back for camping and caravans, just the other side of a large, bench-tabled grassy garden. But all of this would be for nothing if the staff and punters weren't a friendly, welcoming bunch. Being a touristy area, you'd perhaps forgive locals (and their friendly dogs) for displaying a mite of antipathy towards the itinerant masses that flock to their lakes, but at the Church House the motto appears to be 'the more the merrier'. They're a jolly, chatty bunch and there's a boisterous quiz every Sunday headed by a well-heckled quiz master. We can't recommend this place highly enough.
