The Chequers Inn is exactly the kind of pub you hope to find in a small village. It's not a 'nice, but corporate chainy experience', like that offered up by innumerable McMullen and Greene King country-style pubs, but an actual, real pub. Already quite attractive from the outside (even if the font is reminiscent of the titles from Prisoner: Cell Black H), once through the low doors you find a wooden beamed, real fire, traditional pub. There are four distinct areas, with an eating focused bit at the back and some couches towards the front. Signs above the bar let you know you can ask about both home made cards and home made pickles. Or how about the truly confusing "pickled egg in a packet of crisps" for 80p? It apparently works well with an extra dash of vinegar and is nicely washed down with one of the three ales available. Food prices are eminently reasonable and the meat from a local farm excellent quality. It can be rather quiet here, but at lunchtimes and weekday evenings it can be pleasantly busy, mainly filled with locals. If you hanker for traditional style pubs with hospitable service, then the Chequers Inn is certainly worth considering. We love it here.

This pub is NOT child friendly (or even friendly to be honest!)
We took our 2 and a half year old there today. She was impeccably well behaved for her entire meal. After her meal while we were waiting and waiting (and waiting!) for our plates to be cleared so that we could order ice-cream, she got down from her seat for (literally) one minute to go and request an ice-cream but was ushered aggressively back to her seat by an impatient and pretty miserable bar maid. She was frightened and started to cry.
There are signs inside saying that this pub ‘welcomes’ well behaved children. This isn’t the case. Children are not welcome. Beware!
No wonder so many pubs are going out of business if this is the way that patrons are being treated! Our daughter really was very well behaved, as some children are!

Go to the White Horse just up the road – what a difference – we went there a few weeks ago and received a very warm welcome – they even went out of their way to make our daughter a children’s meal of our choice.

Chequers Inn won’t be getting another penny of our hard earned cash!
