Wareside, with its tiny population is lucky enough to boast not one but two pubs to choose from. However, while the Chequers over the road is a more local, traditional affair, the White Horse is somewhat more mainstream. A Greene King pub, it is an attractive and old building, with two bars and a lovely big fireplace. There is, understandably a faint feeling of corporateness to the place but the parochial nature of the place is what gives the place the one pint rating we've reluctantly had to give it. One bar - predominantly the eating area - was filled with people hovering around and it felt rather like a private party. The other bar was worse, with a baby being changed on the pool table. Nice that people feel relaxed in their local, but this was to the detriment of the pub. Lovely views form the beer garden notwithstanding, as soon as the Chequers opened for the evening shift we couldn't wait to get away.

I first visited the pub on a recommendation of the food. The food was superb, not gastro pub, just bloomin good food. After a few meals there my wife and I migrated to the bar, we are both crossword buffs and were soon asked to help the others there with crosswords, very friendly and a fun place. This is a Greene King tied house therefore the drinks prices are fixed, but the atmosphere, food and guest beers more than made up for this.
My only criticism is that sometimes on a Sunday (no reservations) you have to wait for a table, as the restaurant is very popular and consequently busy, but it is worth the wait.
There is another pub over the road where they have a cook, but in here they have trained chefs!
