The Old House at Home, West Wittering
With the burgeoning interest in surfing, kite and wind surfing, and the frenzied tides, wildlife and unspoilt beaches of the Wittering villages, it's unsurprising that the local pubs are undergoing a renaissance and picking up a whole new trade from the young and high-spending visitors to this area. The Old House At Home is one such, and it's responding well to the demand its getting. A fairly standardly built roadhouse, probably dating back to about the 1920s, the Old House At Home sits happily enough in the small group of shops and houses that constitute the village of West Wittering. Its bars are now split over two levels and older customers can get away from the younger folk, by sneaking into the corners of the middle bar. The garden, however, offers no respite from children and in the summer months this is very much a family pub. We think the beer choices change a little, but London Pride appears like an evergreen, and it's served up here in tip-top condition, indeed all the beers are quite splendid. The food range majors on fairly simple and it isn't cheap, but the portions are extremely generous and even on a very busy Saturday lunchtime, everything we had was cooked to perfection. The only gripe we'd have with the Old House is their strange computerised food-order system which looked odd to us as customers, and seemed to confuse the staff. We weren't the only people who seemed to get missed items and little problems as a result. However, when the very human manager stepped in everything was sorted out with good grace and efficiency at a very busy time. If the Old House At Home can keep up its standard it's going to do well and get repeat visitors time after time. But, if anyone from the pub reads this, they should please get rid of the food POS system and go back to a notepad and pencil.
