The Evil Eye Lounge seems to be a little bit of everything and happily does a good job at all of them. The front section is an off licence, selling an excellent array of ales, Belgian lagers and cigars. The the middle bit, on the other hand, is an internet cafe. It's towards the back, however, that you find the 'lounge' bit. The decor and layout make it look a little like a student bar and indeed the demographics err towards younger student types. They seem to have discerning taste, though, as the array of whiskeys, bourbons and other spirits which line the back of the bar is truly impressive. They do a mean cocktail, we understand. Out back is a decked area to enjoy the inclement weather, while Thai food fixes the hunger pangs and a mammoth selection of tunes keeps things lively.

Evil Eye certainly is the eclectic mixer to any spirit, and boy does it have an array of those! It stands out among all the bars in York with its individualism and welcoming atmosphere. A student may grumble with having to pay a minimum of £5 for a decent cocktail - but then the cocktail is VERY decent, using the top branded spirits from a selection of at least 200, and considering when you'd pay double that for a Bacardi and coke in some 'fancy' bars elsewhere, it certainly is a deal to be made the most of.

The Kitchen offers authentic South East Asian food from ramen soups, salads, curries or the classic Evil chips which has great value for money, as well as chilli-kick if you desire. If you can stomach it, MONSTER Sunday roasts more than live up to their name. These will literally take you the best part of an hour to work through but offer the perfect cure to the night before.

Not least to mention is the opium-den-style fittings with small cosy garden as well as bohemian bedding upstairs. The only downside being the internet cafe set up on the first floor which doesn't seem to fit in with the Eye's relaxed character.

With a shop up front boasting a great range of beers and cigars, and friendly staff who will happily recommend you a drink, make one up to your individual taste or simply join you in a shot, this is a must go place for anyone visiting York who enjoys a relaxing drink. For the more adventurous, ask the bar staff for a round of Chinese takeaway and see what cocktail you end up with - avoid the first few columns unless absynthe is your tipple of choice.
