A visit to York would not be complete without a trip to a Sam Smith's pub; after all, Tadcaster is just up the road, so the beer should be in tip top condition. And indeed in the Hansom Cab it was just that, with the usual Sam Smith ales on tap, pegged at North Yorkshire prices. Whether or not you approve of the Sam Smith's formula, they do usually somehow avoid feeling like being part of a chain in the way that, say, Wetherspoon does. The Hansom Cab follows this philosophy and inside you'll find wooden panelling on the walls and green leather seating. Pillars break up the front of the room, giving the impression that the place had nooks and crannies, while the back is a little more open for vertical drinkers. It was plenty busy enough on our Wednesday visit, so we can imagine Fridays becoming crowded. That said, the ambience was friendly and relaxed and we happily award a hearty three pint rating.

Lovely pub this. My then girl friend and I went into it many years ago, and she insisted on calling it "The Handsome Crab" We have laughed about it for years, and she's now my wife (and mother of our 20 year old son) We revisited it this year (2010) and it has lost none of its charm. Well worthy of a visit.

Facing York Minster, look right and take High Petergate. This becomes Low Petergate. Turn right into Church Street which will become Feasegate. This will bring you round to Market Street on which the pub is situated.
