We used to love this pub, it was about as local as a local could get, being squeezed into two joined-up Victorian terraced houses in a residential area (with a passageway through to it from the next street). In the eighties, walking in here you were transported from the quiet residential surroundings of the area to Club Tropicana, where unfortunately, the drink weren’t free. The place was festooned with fake tropical plants and fake bamboo furniture and a DJ usually blasted out dance tunes at the weekends. Sunday nights were especially mad, when glammed-up people would come from miles around to enjoy the atmosphere. (And this was in the days when pubs had to close at 10:30). In the nineties it settled down to become a quiet, solid, reliable boozer. Serving an excellent pint in a friendly family atmosphere and steadily accumulating an impressive collection darts trophies. Then the landlord suddenly died and the pub was left in limbo, until a few years ago when it was ignominuously converted (against the will of a lot of the local populace) into flats. Even though some of us were regulars here, it’s one we never got around to reviewing, but for a couple of decades at least, it would have been a solid four-pinter. The passing of the Unicorn is something to lament.
