The Sustainable Communities Bill was introduced to Parliament as a Private Members Bill and unusually received widespread cross-part support. It received Royal Assent in October 2007. It was designed to promote the sustainability of local communities and focuses on economic, social and environmental issues. When your local council uses the Act they must set up a panel of local representatives. This is not a consultative process - it is for the panel to reach an agreement. Examples of where it can be used are to ensure full planning permission is required when a pub is converted to another use. It can also be used to tackle restrictive covenants that stop a closed pub being reopened as a pub again. If you’d like more information, www.Localworks.org is a good website which gives helpful advice on getting the most from the Sustainable Communities Act and is supported by CAMRA.
