A welcome refuge in the quiet back streets two minutes from Kensington High Street, the Elephant and Castle's multi-award winning flower-festooned facade almost hides this small and homely pub. Though taken over by Nicholson's, it's not the normal routine for their pubs. The beer and service are good and the atmosphere is usually pretty lively. The food is very good, and not Nicholson's usual menu, with daily menu choices and specials, and not too expensive either. It used to be that whenever there's a hint of sunshine the locals deserted the bar for the tiny front garden - now turned into a smoker's paradise - spilling out onto the street. But there must have been complaints from the neighbours, as the signs make it clear that drinking on the pavements isn't allowed or past a certain time in the evening as a courtesy to the aforementioned. Still, it's got a lot going for it and its worth a look in.

The management has recently (maybe a year ago) changed and improved the place. The beer is certainly better-kept, the pipes cleaner, and more guest ales. The staff are variable but better than under the previous landlord. It still often seems to take an annoyingly long time to get served even when the place isn't that busy. Clientele is office workers / journalists / music biz types, shoppers and a few well-to-do locals. The controversy over standing outside on the pavement seems to have died down - and the former landlord's ridiculous habit of clearing outdoor tables and chairs away at 4pm has gone the same way as him.

It is a real shame because this pub used to a really nice little traditional pub. Unfortunately the current assistant manager has no class, no manners and no charm and to be fair is just damn right rude. The rest of the staff are pleasant and courteous and it is a reall shame that it is managed by such a clueless fool. If you do visit and are unfortunate enough to see her then I will guarantee you wont go back. Try the Builders Arms or The Britania for a more pleasant evening.
