Until the end of 2008, the Roebuck was run by Mitchell and Butler, as part of their upmarket unbranded chain. We liked it then, but they decided to sell it to Wells and Young's, who have kept the general upmarket feel to the place; it is Hampstead, after all. As such, apart from the choice of standard Young's beers on tap, you'd be hard pushed to work out who owns it. There's a good selection of areas to sit in the main bar, ranging from open tables to private nooks; some of the retro looking chairs are exceptionally comfortable and don't jar with the remaining vestiges of the pub's Victorian past. Elsewhere, you'll find something called Fawn's Cocktail Bar (get the connection?) down in the basement and an attractive conservatory out the back. The leafy beer garden is perfect to soak up some sun and get some exercise, as some of the wooden seats are so heavy, you might need help to move them. Overall, the feeling is luxuriant but welcoming and better than a number of recent Young's refurbishments.

We went to the Roebuck for lunch today, we had tasty sunday roasts. Our friends joined us in the back garden for a couple drinks,we ended up staying the whole afternoon!Trendy place, pleasant service and excellent food.I would definitely recommend going to this pub located opposite the royal free hospital (not the same food! or drink for that matter). They have a great selection of food and wine. Great day with the sun out today.During the week, they have £5 lunch deals.we will be back soon with an army of friends!

Went to the Roebuck with a large group of friends for Christmas lunch. Hugely disappointing. Portions were stingy and the food poorly cooked - verging on inedible. As the food didn't arrive until gone 2pm and we had hungry kids with us, it was too late to send the food back and go somewhere else, so we struggled through, but under different circumstances, i would have walked out.

The veggie option was limp pasta in tomato sauce, the roast beef came out as shriveled rump steak that was tough as old boots. The roast potatoes were covered in black bruises, the carrots and sprouts, i can only assume, were left over from last year. For £10 a head i'd have felt ripped off - but The Roebuck had the cheek to charge us £20 a head for two courses. Disgraceful.

When we spoke to the Manager, our complaints fell on deaf ears. She was unconcerned that we'd had such a bad experience. When we saw people being served huge plates of lovely looking roast beef with yorkshire pudding and all the trimmings (for £11!), she explained that they had ordered off the Sunday lunch menu, but we'd ordered off the Christmas menu, which is provided by Youngs centrally. If we had a problem we should take it up with Youngs. So tough basically (though not as tough as the steak we were served...).

I'm taking it up with Youngs - but thought i'd warn you too. I won't go there again - that's for sure.
