Well, the previous experiment to transform the Greenwich Pensioner into a Shoreditch-type style bar appears to have failed and the pub has returned to its roots as a locals pub in a residential area. Oh, there are still remnants, with squishy sofas and some non-pub tables and chairs sprinkled round - and it's hard to miss the plastic laminated bar surround with fake shark's head mounted on it. But the pub feels like it has returned to what it does best, serving the local community, not a bad thing. The friendly bar man and pleasant enough locals didn't hurt, but the lack of any real ale on the pumps was a down side. There's lots of outdoor seating for taking advantage of the promised heat wave this summer, with tables out front and an enclosed garden at the back. Although it appears they don't do food like before, the presence of two barbecues in the garden suggests they're waiting for that bit of sunshine to arrive so they can fire it up. It's not an area that people generally would seek out, surrounded on three sides by main trunk roads that whisk commuters to and from the City, Canary Wharf, over the river and points north and east, but if you are in the area and want to get away from the madness that is the East India Dock Road, this is an ideal place to go.
