O'Neill's is one of those love or hate brands and the same might be said for this particular venue. Whatever your opinion about housing a pub in an old converted church, it's certainly very impressive, with the sheer scale quite breathtaking (by pub standards anyway). It's the predictable O'Neill's recipe of average beer and food, but being a place with such a huge capacity it's very popular on weekend nights with younger North Londoners. Therefore, rather officious bouncers appear at the door on those nights. If this place was in Central London it would be an utter nightmare, but up in tubeless Muswell Hill it's recommended, if only for the architecture. Come earlier in the week, get a seat and enjoy.

Excellent pub with friendly staff. Not too crowded at weekends. Always a good atmosphere for the footie

Wow, Danneville, you sure don't like this place! I have a lot of sympathy for Danneville's reactions. The problem is that the first generation Irish bar staff and management (they were all born and grew up in the Republic of Ireland to judge from their strong accents) exhibit an unconcealed contempt for most of their (English) customers. This is manifested in the careless service Danneville refers to, with the staff ignoring who is next in line at the bar in favour of their own discussions among themselves. It's almost as if they see serving the customers as a hugely irritating distraction from their private conversations. Smiles for said customers are noticable by their absence, with narrowed eyes and frowns accompanying a staccato ''Yes!'' instead of, oh, something polite and friendly like ''Hello, what would you like?'' And before anyone starts, I'm one hundred percent, first generation Irish myself!

If you enjoy waiting several hours to get served while surrounded by teenage mock 'geezers' who like to queue jump and then get served by gormless staff then this is the shithole for you. If you like pints with no head that often taste of pipe cleaner then this is the shithole for you. If you like trouble on a Saturday night and being rushed out by Soviet bloc thugs the second the clock hits eleven then this is the shithole for you. If you like subsidising soulless chains then please come here and join the thugs and zombies.
