how to find it:
From Highbury and Islington, go out of the station and turn right towards Upper Street. The bar is only maybe ten minutes walk down and on the right. From Angel, go out of the station and carry on along Upper Street past the Business Design Centre and the Green. It's about 15-20 minutes walk from the tube. Pass the Kings Head Theatre Club, and it's just down on the left side of Upper Street.

This King's Head is still as arty as it ever was - not our thing, if we're honest - but it's kept this tradition up for years and as they say, "if it ain't broke, don't fix it". So, hats off to a long standing institution. It has a decent Victorian interior that hasn't fallen prey to the urge to renovate and real fires (not that fake gas stuff) giving it a kind of cosy, lived in atmosphere during quieter, weekday afternoons. It has pretty decent beers on the hand pumps and good service. The old cash till is still there, but at least they don't charge in shillings and pence any more, we suppose that makes the drink seem too expensive nowadays - sixty bob for a bottle of lager? guineas would be more appropriate, but the sums are too hard if there's a lot on the tab. The theatre's the reason most people go there and there's usually live music in the bar every night of the week. There's a late license - 1am during the week and 2am weekends.
