This pub has seen its popularity surge over the last few years as Spitalfields has transformed in to a Hoxtonite haven, but one thing has remained constant - its eccentric landlady and her constant selection of quirky staff. On our last visit we found ourselves standing at the bar for what seemed like an age while the staff casually polished off cigarettes out the front of the pub... but somehow we and everyone else at the bar continued smiling. Maybe it was the weather; more likely it's the certain charm that this place still exudes, although on a busy Friday night or Sunday afternoon the weight of the hoards can be enough to quell that. Something of an institution to say the least, there will be many long standing Brick Lane residents with fond memories of this place, garnered before the new Spitalfields set altered an area that has seen its fair share of evolutions over the years. Despite the influx of non-locals, many are still happy to drink a pint here, even if a little less regularly than they might once have done. Overall, well worth a look if you're in the area and there's always the Commercial Tavern up the road if you fancy something a bit posher, or the Pride of Spitalfields around off Brick Lane for a no nonsense pint.
