how to find it:

From Angel, go out of the station and carry on along Upper Street past the Business Design Centre and the Green. It's about 15 minutes walk from the tube. Pass the Kings Head Theatre Club, and it's just down on the left side of Upper Street. From Highbury and Islington, go out of the station and turn right towards Upper Street. The bar is only maybe 10-15 minutes walk down and on the right.

picture of Hope and Anchor
The Hope & Anchor attracts the crowd not catered to in the numerous All Bar One type bars further up the road towards Angel. It proffers live music in a tiny basement, and the imbibing of liquids while sweating to said tunes. Upstairs, there's a cracking jukebox and it's all very cool and skinny jeans-esque, apart from the local old geezer who sits and people-watches all night. It may appear a bit tidier than in its punk heyday, but it's (still) a music pub, it's a bit sticky and it sells beer. 'Nuff said.

This is a great pub for viewing live bands. London favourites, The Cavaliers and Gambling Hearts are often seen here, and the Hearts' drummer, Will Kozak, works behind the bar. A very friendly place.
