picture of Woodman
Since coming under new ownership in 2006, the Woodman has been a consistently pleasant place to spend a couple of hours. It helps that they were successful in removing the ne'er-do-wells who once occupied this pub (in part by getting rid of the pool tables) and consequently there's now a healthy mix of punters. The interior is elegant, with the original wood panelling predominant throughout creating a warm atmosphere. Service from the bar staff is also extremely friendly and while we like the table service, it does seem to confuse some people. There's a reasonable choice of ale on - four during our last visit, with Greene King IPA and Bombardier the regulars here. The food quality is also excellent, but the portions have taken a turn for the worse since our last visit - going away hungry is a bad sign when you're paying £12 for Sunday Lunch. This bit of Highgate has a quartet of reasonable pubs, but the Woodman is probably the most consistent and consequently the one we keep coming back to.

Eating at the Woodman ... we last ate here on 08/02/2009

Pub grub bordering on the gastro but well made. Prices have gone up recently (the Roast Beef from £9.50 to £12) and the portions have shrunk in the process. The meat was superb, as was the gravy, but it's cheeky that one tiny slice of carrot and one small slice of parsnip were supposed to represent the vegetables. You can order additional veg, but only if you want to add another £2.50 to your bill. The venison stew (£10.50) was also excellent but not exactly brimming. Suffice to say we left hungry.
