When the Crabtree Tavern became a gastro-conversion a few years ago, we weren't very complimentary about this pub. Well, given the amount of time since we were in last, we were more than pleasantly surprised - we found a pleasant and comfortable pub with decent beer (three pumps, bottled Belgian beer), friendly locals and great staff. Add a superb view of the river and this is practically perfect for that afternoon with a few pints by the water. It was a bit cold the last time we were in, and it would have been nice if the fire was on, but that's a minor complaint. The front bar has a banquette around one side with a smattering of tables around the room and the area at the back - overlooking the river - was set for eating when we were there last, which is something we're not terribly keen on, particularly when it's arguably the best part of the pub when it's too cold for the terrace. The food looked good, about average gastro prices for the current climate and decent portion sizes. We'll have to go back and try it.

A pub that was! The crabtree has can become only what can be described as 'The epicentre of an organised shamble of huge proportions! It used to be a local that had great staff, who knew how to work behind a bar! Sadly the new (pathetic) owners have chosen to select people who just don't have a clue! The management themselves (dynamic duo...not) tend to just skirt around the pub pretending the are running the river cafe down the road!!! My rant is born from strolling in at 9.40 on a Tuesday evening and being told (finally) food will take approx 40mins!! As a gazed around the pub all I could see was finished plates, glasses stacked on tables that the staff seemed incapable of clearing up! Bottom line is....Good management = Good pub! This one is far from just being a poor pub....in a negative sense!
